Electric pickup trucks are beginning to gain serious traction in the UK, combining zero-emission performance with everyday utility. While the market is still in its early stages, recent developments suggest a significant surge in availability and demand over the coming years.
Why the UK Market for Electric Pickup Trucks Is Heating Up
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the electric van sector grew by 38.7% in 2023. 4×4 vans alone were up by an impressive 85%. Yet, dedicated electric pickup trucks remain limited in the UK. While traditional automakers and startups are actively developing new models, few are currently available to buy.
Thankfully, the UK’s public EV charging infrastructure is expanding rapidly. This makes electric pickups more viable for work and personal use.
Maxus T90: The UK’s First Electric Pickup Truck
The Maxus T90, with UK deliveries starting in 2023, holds the title of the first purpose-built electric pickup truck available for purchase in the UK. With 201 bhp and 310 Nm of torque from a single electric motor, the T90 offers responsive power suited to both urban and off-road settings.
Its 88.5 kWh battery delivers a usable driving range for daily tasks. Plus, as the first fully electric pickup truck in the UK, it is a pioneer in the segment.
Maxus eTerron 9: Bigger and in Britain
The Maxus eTerron 9 is a promising follow-up to the T90. This pickup truck delivers 225 bhp, 350 Nm of torque. It also features an upgraded 102 kWh battery with a WLTP range of up to 270 miles.
Charging comes in the form of 100 kW DC fast charging, allowing a 20–80% recharge in around 40 minutes. Towing capacity is 3.5 tonnes and payload capacity is a decent 620 kg.
Electric Pickup Trucks You Can Rent in the UK But Not Buy
It is a catastrophe that some of the most exciting electric pickup trucks aren’t yet for sale in the UK. However, they can be rented from EVision. These include the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1T. Two US-built models with exceptional specs that will blow you away.
